Michael J. Hutchinson,
Owner & Third Generation Builder

Tucked away in historic Newtown, PA, Michael Hutchinson quietly runs one of the most respected general construction and restoration companies in Eastern Pennsylvania. His ties to this quaint Bucks County birthplace, coupled with several generations of proven historic construction and a passion for history, have equipped Michael with the unique skill of meticulously refitting homes of all ages.

“It’s like being a detective.  I know how to search for clues and unravel the mystery of the house’s original design,” says Mike proudly as he points to the custom molding around a beautifully restored fireplace in the dining room of his 175-year old home.

Michael has a serious work ethic. His easygoing personality and refreshing sense of humor are responsible for long-term customer relations.

Generations of Excellence

Michael Hutchinson grew up in Newtown, and in fact, lives in his grandfather’s house on State Street where he raised his family. As a third-generation craftsman, Michael began learning the art of building at the age of 14 from his father and grandfather and started his own company in 1975. As he continues with the trade passed down through the family, Michael has become well-known for his understanding of complex problems of an old house as well as creative and contemporary solutions that don’t compromise the history and integrity of the home. His work is reflected around Newtown, from the Rempher Wing of Court Inn, Worstall Stables conversion, the first three Barclay Court townhouses, restoration of the Whitehall Hotel after fire completely gutted the historic building, to the many addition and restoration projects in the homes of Newtown residents and the surrounding Bucks County area.

Michael’s interest in the historical aspect of his trade began at 16 when he salvaged many features of an old house that were thrown in a dumpster on his father’s job site. Purchasing his first home on Liberty Street, he realized new techniques didn’t mesh with an old house and so began his conversion from new house builder to old house restoration craftsman. Michael’s interest in history and research of historical architecture is evident in his final product. The biggest compliment he receives is when someone can’t tell the new from the old. On the Christmas House Tour, his wife Susan heard the tour guide say the intricate crown molding in a hallway was added in the mid 19th century, when in fact, it was added by Michael in 2007.

The line of Hutchinson builders dates back to the 1920s when Michael’s grandfather established the family name as synonymous with superior construction. This father-son apprenticeship tradition has been carried down through the generations; Michael continually perfects his work by constantly refining his carpentry and building design skills, while acting as mentor to his son.

Uncommon in the construction industry, the Hutchinson philosophy subscribes to a zero tolerance for flawed work—while keeping your project budget in mind all the while.  Thorough attention to detail is consistently paid, as is the necessary patience for perfection.

The pride and fine craftsmanship of Michael Hutchinson’s work has contributed to the classic face of historical Newtown.  Closely affiliated with the local business community, some of Michael Hutchinson’s work is regularly showcased in the Newtown Historic Association’s annual Christmas Open House Tour, an exciting event where the public is invited to examine the finest construction projects on pre-existing historical properties.

Whether it’s new construction or historic restoration, all projects by Michael J. Hutchinson Building and Design Company incorporate the same level of quality craftsmanship, that of fine precision and copious detail.
